In case you haven’t been following the news recently, there is a church in Gainesville, FL, The Dove World Outreach Center, that plans on holding a Quran burning ceremony on Sept. 11, 2010 as a protest to Islam and Muslims. The church’s pastor Terry Jones was denied a burning permit by the City of Gainesville and said he still planned to continue with the ceremony. He was then warned by Gen. Petraeus who said this could bring more harm to the troops in Afghanistan.
Jones had a response to the statement from Petraeus.
“The general needs to point his finger to radical Islam and tell them to shut up, tell them to stop, tell them that we will not bow our knees to them,” Jones said on CNN’s “AC360.”
“We are burning the book,” Jones said. “We are not killing someone. We are not murdering people.”
My friend Karen Spears Zacharias wrote about the subject yesterday over on her blog.
There have been protests, U.S. flag burnings and dolls burned in effigy in Afghanistan.
One member posts on the church’s blog 10 reasons to burn a Quran. The web site is quite unbelievable. It’s amazing to me that this kind of church filled with hate exists.
The church even has a facebook group that is liked by more than 11,000 people. Good Lord!
Hillary Clinton has even voiced her opposition to the Koran burning plan of the Dove World Outreach Center.
Now, I just read a story in the Knoxville News Sentinel that a group in Oak Ridge, TN plans to hold a candlelight vigil to oppose the Quran burning event. The candle light vigil is planned Sunday, Sept. 12 at the Ok Ridge Civic Center.
So what are your plans for Sept. 11, burn a Quran, or attend a candle light vigil? Or stay at home and remember the victims of 9-11 with a prayer?
